Job Description:

The Director of Theatre Operations in collaboration with the Academic Department Manager (ADM) oversees the Department of Africana Studies / Rites and Reason Theatres public facing programming, which includes but is not limited to lectures, seminars, exhibitions, special projects and initiatives, and all of the Rites and Reason Theatre performances and productions. In addition, they may need to interface with university administrators, alumni, students and community members in the design, development and execution of Africana Studies-related initiatives across the campus.

The incumbent collaborates with the Department Chair and the Departments Faculty Advisory Committee to develop a theatrical season and execute programs, set and maintain project budgets, design and implement project management systems, and advance simultaneously occurring projects at varying stages of development. They work collaboratively with the Chair and ADM to create and supervise all project and event budgets. The Director of Theatre Operations supervises staff, oversees contracts for the hiring of artists as well as the hiring of contractual technical, and production staff. The incumbent also plays a critical role in marketing and promotion, box office management, audience development and strategic partnerships. In consultation with the Chair and the Faculty Advisory Committee, the person in this role is expected to interface with campus-wide university and administrative offices to design and execute a vision for the department in relation to arts programming across the university and within the field.

Education and Experience

  • Masters Degree with 3-5 years of related experience, or minimum requirement or Bachelors Degree with 5-7 years of related experience.
  • Productive and wide-ranging contacts in the professional arts world, preferably with Black theatre, dance, and/or music artists and scholars based in the U.S., the Caribbean, in Africa, or other parts of the African Diaspora.
  • Prior financial management including writing grants preferred.
  • Supervisory experience required.
  • Working knowledge of professional theatre, dance or other related performance practices, tools, materials, and safety protocols.
  • Strong organizational and management skills and a demonstrated ability to collaborate with and mobilize others (staff, faculty, students) to achieve and develop shared goals.
  • Experience with project planning and adhere to deadlines.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point), Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, Calendar, tasks, etc.) Zoom, Canva, and Workday.
  • Must be able to work independently but also part of a team. A team player who is able to listen well, inspire others, and lead by example.

Additional physical demands and working conditions:

  • The incumbent will be expected to work weekends and evenings as required.
