Pediatric Abdominal Transplant Position for Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant

Phoenix Childrens Hospital is seeking an Advanced Practice Practitioner (APP) to join our growing abdominal transplant team. This position will be one of six APPs providing inpatient and outpatient coverage to the pediatric kidney and liver transplant programs. The Pediatric Kidney Transplantation Program began operations in 2002 and is the only active pediatric kidney transplant program in Arizona, having performed over 280 transplants and typically transposing 12?15 patients per year with outcomes meeting or exceeding expectations. The Pediatric Liver Transplantation Program, launched in 2012, now performs an average of five transplants per year with comparable success rates. The liver and kidney transplant programs are part of the Phoenix Childrens Transplant Center, which also includes bone marrow and heart transplantation programs. The role collaborates directly with hepatologists, nephrologists, surgeons and other clinical teams, including nutritionists, social workers, pharmacists, and transplant coordinators.

Required Qualifications


  • Pediatric Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant licensure in Arizona.
  • At least one year of NP/PA experience in pediatrics or transplant (preferred).
  • Previous inpatient clinical experience is required, preferably in an environment caring for transplant patients.


General Responsibilities

The team of six APPs provides inpatient coverage to the liver and kidney transplant programs seven days a week in rotation. When not providing inpatient coverage, APPs give outpatient coverage to the liver transplant program.

Inpatient Work
  • Includes H & P, consults, and rounding on patients (primarily in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and on the transplant unit) for pre?transplant, transplant, and post?transplant patients.
  • Extensive discharge education and care coordination.
  • Management of medically complex pediatric patients with end?stage liver and kidney disease, including post?transplant immunosuppressant management.
  • Collaboration with residents, attendings, and other disciplines; strong communication and interpersonal skills required.
  • Schedule: 10?hour days during the week with weekend coverage consisting of 5?hour shifts.
  • Partners with five other APPs to provide 24/7/365 call coverage to the transplant program.


Outpatient Work
  • Clinic located on the Phoenix Childrens Hospital campus at 1919 E. Thomas.
  • Must be able to work autonomously and in partnership with multiple disciplines continuously.
  • Management of the transplant population, including evaluations and consenting for transplant, ongoing follow?up, and coordination of care.
  • Extensive patient and family education.
  • Supervising and working directly with dedicated transplant medical assistants and registered nurses.
  • Active coordination and participation in committee meetings related to transplant patient management.
