Covenant has a beautiful 400-acre campus that stretches atop Lookout Mountain, Georgia on the Georgia/Tennessee border, just outside of Chattanooga. The community is a hub of vibrant cultural, educational, business, high-tech and entertainment activity and is an affordable place to live or raise a family. The campus enjoys incredible vistas of the Smoky Mountains and the Cumberland Plateau with views that span across several states. The region is widely known as an outdoor recreational paradise for campers, boaters, cyclists, climbers, cavers and hikers, all this while being conveniently located within two hours of Atlanta, Nashville and Knoxville.
Summary: The Theatre Technical Assistant works with the Technical Director to successfully fulfill the creative, design, and technical needs for up to four productions per year, focusing primarily on costumes, props, and run support. This role blends creativity, collaboration, and practical hands-on work to bring each production to life in a way that aligns with Covenant's mission and values.
The Technical Assistant is a 10-month position paid at an hourly rate for hours actually worked, up to 700 hours total over the 33-week academic year. This is an average of 20 hours per week (excluding unpaid holidays), but in actuality will be more than 20 hours/week during production builds and fewer than 20 hours/week between shows. Flexibility in scheduling work hours will be imperative.
The Technical Assistant should never need to work more than 40 hours in one week. One of Covenant Theatre's values is good stewardship of resources, and we strive to protect one another's time as much as we protect Covenant's financial investment in theatre.
If the Technical Assistant is qualified, they may be hired to design costumes, scenery, lighting, projections, or sound for one or more shows per year in addition to their duties as Technical Assistant, with additional responsibilities, time requirements, and contract pay.
Responsibilities: - Coordinate and supervise the construction, pulling, purchasing, rental, and/or sourcing of costumes (including makeup and hair) and properties (items that are used by actors, and set dressing).
- Work with production staff to plan and prioritize needs based on directorial vision, rehearsal timeline, and production budget.
- Create and maintain documentation as outlined by the Technical Director.
- Coordinate with set designer (or props designer, if there is one) for props plan/design, or serve as props designer/coordinator.
- Coordinate with costume designer to create a costume plot and get direction about costume pieces and looks. Schedule and run measurements, fittings, and dress parade.
- Work with actors to design and execute hair (including wigs) and makeup, based on costume designer input.
- Construct props and/or costumes as skills allow.
- Supervise and train student workers, volunteers, and contract workers to execute costume and prop needs.
- Monitor budget, and keep Technical Director, Production Director, and appropriate designer(s) apprised of expenditures and completion timelines.
- Attend production meetings and technical rehearsals to take notes about and trouble-shoot props and costumes.
- Attend and supervise costume and props strike. Ensure that costumes and props are stored appropriately or returned.
- Become familiar with current costume and props stock, organize it so that it is easily accessible and usable, and create inventory lists as needed.
- Assist the Technical Director as needed, and fulfill TD functions when the TD cannot.
- Work selflessly and conscientiously as a member of the Covenant Theatre production team and the Department of Theatre, loving and supporting one another in our shared goal of glorifying God and fulfilling Covenant's mission through our creative work.
- Fulfill other duties as assigned by the Theatre General Manager/Technical Director
Requirements: - Demonstrated ability in the following general areas: project management, organization and problem-solving, creativity and handcrafting of some kind, supervising and giving instructions to others, managing budgets, oral and written communication, managing multiple projects at one time
- Willingness to learn new skills and practices
Preferences: - Bachelor's Degree in Theatre or related field
- Experience working in theatre
- Sewing or building experience

Physical Work Environment: - This role is expected to be performed on campus unless otherwise directed or arranged for and operates primarily in theatre venues and workshops on campus and in a professional office environment using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and other job-related technology.
- There is a mix of standing and sitting for this role with periods of sitting interspersed with periods of active movement (walking, crawling, crouching, reaching on tiptoe).
- There will be a need for use of intricate fine-motor skills
- Classified as medium, occasional lifting or lowering an object from one level to another (includes upward pulling) up to 30 lbs.
- Regular use of sharp instruments, irons, hot glue guns, pins and needles, "shop" tools, etc.
- Expressing or exchanging ideas and conversation by means of the spoken and written word; needs to be fluent and conversant using the English language.
- Generally, college hours of operation for full-time staff are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm. As noted, extra/alternative work hours and specially scheduled evening and weekend work may be required from time-to-time as job duties, performance schedules, team or departmental needs or urgent/emergency response demands. Every effort will be made to offset unusual work demands with flextime options or with overtime pay (when approved by an authorized supervisor.)
- Travel is generally not required for this position.
